Lost all sound

[uriah heep]

after updates and installing some programs I have lost all sound.  nothing
works cd's, headphones, speakers, etc.  This is on lucid 10.4 64 bit.  In
the past it all worked. I am quite ignorant about these things. Could
someone assist me or at least point me to a url where I could learn trouble
shooting steps?
