Some suggestions:

1. Specify _which_ Dell Vostro you have (and use it in your google 
searches).

2. Read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto

3. Read http://playingwithsid.blogspot.com/2010/06/headphone-jack-sense-problem-in-ubuntu.html
   Now that you know you have a "Headphone jack sense problem" you
   can use that info in your google searches.
