smb problems

I use gadmin-Samba to configure my network shares etc., and it lets me
disconnect Samba. This its not the command line part, although I'm sure it
can be done from that - I just don't know how. It used to be "sudo
/etc/init.d samba restart" or something similar but that doesn't work now.
When restarted in gadmin-Samba a message appears that winbindd is inactive.
At that point I open a terminal window and type "sudo winbindd" which
starts winbindd and then everything works.

I wonder if there is some kind of time limitation bug in Samba that won't
let it run continually...
