Libreoffice is a rebadged OpenOffice and identical to functionality for the same release at the moment. It was forked a couple of months ago and kept in line with the source code released by Oracle. Oracle has just tried to abandon OpenOffice and dump it on Apache but it's not certain if Apache will pick it up or not. -- Hakan (m1fcj) - http://www.hititgunesi.org From linux at appjaws.plus.com Fri Jun 3 14:20:35 2011 From: linux at appjaws.plus.com (Paul Stear) Date: Fri, 3 Jun 2011 15:20:35 +0100 Subject: I have kubuntu Natty installed and with to change from libreoffice to openoffice In-Reply-To: References: <201106031509.11702.linux@appjaws.plus.com> Message-ID: <201106031520.35547.linux@appjaws.plus.com> On Friday 03 Jun 2011 15:15:44 Hakan Koseoglu wrote: > Paul, > > On 3 June 2011 15:09, Paul Stear wrote: > > Hi, > > How can I disable libreoffice and use openoffice? > > I have tried using software management but to install openoffice it > > installs libreoffice instead.. > > libreoffice will not save my complicated spreadshhets. > > Libreoffice is a rebadged OpenOffice and identical to functionality > for the same release at the moment. When I try and save the program just crashes. It asked whether to startup Network Manager for this session and in the future and I mis-answered. Now it does not start automatically. I have tried all the KDE tools I could find (like Kubuntu System Settings tool) and tried Googling, but somehow can't find the answer, even though it seems so simple. Adding NetworkManager to the startup list in Kubuntu System Settings doesn't seem to do anything, as it doesn't start. Maybe related to the newer approach of starting services? I am still on Kubuntu 10.04, 32 bit, but am using the latest KDE as far as I know. If the screen saver has locked the screen, you could press a key or move the mouse to get a password prompt. However, if your system doesn't respond any more, there might be a bug related to your hardware. IIRC, I have seen a similar problem on one of the Ubuntu lists some time ago and it was related to hibernation of a laptop. You can search for known bugs at . Furthermore, if you can't find a solution there, it would be useful if you tell us a bit more about your hardware. Is your machine a desktop or laptop? What graphics card do you use? Do you have desktop effects enabled? How long have you been away from the machine when it doesn't respond? > Re: Tex Questions Just for your info, if you have a new question, it would be better not to reply to a mail from the list but to start a new thread - just click on the mail address of the list. KDE needs some adjustments to work better with dual-monitor. It's a known problem. The workaround depends on your video driver. - xrandr supported: use xrandr. Test it out in your current enviromnent, then place your xrandr commands in /etc/kde4/kdm/Xsetup. - xrandr not supported: use twinview (nvidia) and set up a good old-fashioned /etc/X11/xorg.conf. (I use this. Be careful not to resize your konsole.) ATI will probably have something similar (or support xrandr?) > 2. Quite often if I right click in dolphin on a file and click properties, > dolphin freezes and I have to kill it. I can't reproduce this one. A known problem is Dolphin crashing when moving the pointer over certain files. You can install this servicemenu http://kde- apps.org/content/show.php/Find+with+KFind?content=140365 From within dolphin's configuration - no idea if it will work with Konq, my guess is it should as both are using the same backend bits. > > 2) Ark no longer opens .deb files. I don't know if the slowdowns are related to Amarok of plasma, but I have them too. kded at 100%, the hiccups where nothing reacts for a few seconds... There are already bugs files for the Amarok crash. Please mark yours as a duplicate if it matches one of the below bugs. The last one might be yours because of the 'on closing'. I never close Amarok. It crashes by itself. I've tried to use Dolphin, but so many of the things I can easily do in Konqueror don't work such as splitting the window top/bottom which gives me more space on a widescreen monitor than side-by-side. -- Registered Linux User #466407 http://counter.li.org From tanghus at gmail.com Wed Jun 8 11:19:36 2011 From: tanghus at gmail.com (Thomas Olsen) Date: Wed, 8 Jun 2011 13:19:36 +0200 Subject: Desktop effects not available In-Reply-To: <201106071928.55704.tanghus@gmail.com> References: <201106071928.55704.tanghus@gmail.com> Message-ID: <201106081319.38270.tanghus@gmail.com> On Tuesday 07 June 2011 19:28:55 Thomas Olsen wrote: I purged the ATI blob and now back to radeon. I just looked into this one. The command executed is "amarok --cdplay". When I try to run that it says: "Amarok is already running!". So it's an Amarok bug, not Kubuntu. I've made some Device Action files that adds "Open in File Manager" and "Extract Digital Audio with K3b". The latter already existed as a global config file but it's Predicate=[StorageVolume.ignored == false AND OpticalDisc.availableContent == 'Audio'] doesn't work. I'll attach them to this mail. Just copy them to ~/.kde(4)/share/apps/solid/actions and run kbuildsycoca4. I've also added an action to open Partition Manager when a removeable media is attached. Unforetunately Partition Manager doesn't accept a device as argument so you'll have to select the device yourself. -- Best regards / med venlig hilsen Thomas Olsen Dropbox and my thumb drive had an epic battle. I also have an old 1 Ghz I've Been Moved box with a 'Tahoe' main board in it with kubuntu 10.4 installed on it, called goat because its the sacrificial test box. Sunday I booted it and updated it, then found a media player that gave me a list of internet radio stations that was very extensive and I found a CW station that was playing decent music. Monday, I couldn't find that player again, all there seems to be now is RythmBox, whose radio menu has only about 10 stations, either classical or new age, and with about 90 db of bass boost. Obviously that is not usable. Can anybody tell me where the good internet radio program went between Sunday & Monday? Perhaps have synaptic re-install it maybe? An update on this bug, it turns out that it was a packaging error and a file that should've been in Ark was in some other package. I had a bad problem with k3b not being able to burn dvd9 -R discs - but had no problems with dvd9 +R discs. Problem was resolved when the author of k3b released a bug fix, and now I have no such hassles. (Oh, a PS: although the result of a burn to a -R dvd9 discs was an error message that the burn failed, the burn in fact was OK in 95% - not 100% - cases. So run your bluray disc to see if it actually works.) BC -- The Annual General Meeting of Psychics has been cancelled due to unforseen circumstances. I've been using k3b for many years and have never had to adjust the disc size to burn - in fact I didn't know that one could even do this in k3b. Certainly in k9copy you can adjust the output file (to 4400MB for dvd5 and to 8000MB for dvd9) after which k3b just knows which size disc it it burning but I never knew that one could control the size in k3b. Live and learn..... Where in k3b is this adjustment to be found, thanks? BC -- The Annual General Meeting of Psychics has been cancelled due to unforseen circumstances. I have installed ifuse and can see the iPod when connected via USB. So how do I move some music files to the device? I tried Amarok but trying to drag and drop doesn't work. At the moment he has no 'Music' folder on the iPod as he hasn't downloaded any songs from anywhere. Strange thing is that the iPod doesn't show up as a removable device and I can't 'unmount' it. The same is true for his phone - a Samsung 3G model -- when he presses the 'Play Media' option it doesn't 'mount' but we can still see the music files and copy them to his computer. If he presses the 'Cellphone Memory' (sort of translated from Hebrew) then it is recognized as a usb mass storage device and can me 'unmounted'. I only mentioned his cellphone issues as they seem to be similar to his iPod ones. Any help appreciated. Nigel From o.sinclair at gmail.com Tue Jun 21 13:39:51 2011 From: o.sinclair at gmail.com (O. K3B correctly sizes the Blu-Ray disc at 25.0 GB. What I mean when I say that I leave 1GB at the end, is that after adding all files, K3B reports 1GB still available in the bottom right corner. So, the problem is not that I'm overburning the disc, but rather some kind of bug within K3B or any of it associated utilities. I did a full backup of all data + a fresh system iso before I upgraded. 1. Migration went "so-so". After startup most mailfolders were seen to be empty. After receiving an email in a folder all mail in said folder showed up. I used a "dummy mail" to copy into each folder and voila, mail back. Note I only use pop3, no IMAP or DIMAP 2. It was at first painfully slow. After having found in Kmail Settings that I had hundreds of repeated "mail tags" and removed the bulk of them (THAT was boring) to a few valid tags speed increased to "old KMail". I had these in KAdressbook before and tried to remove them with no luck. Now they are gone there as well, phew. But to press "remove" button one by one tag... 3. To-Do and some other stuff (Kontact) did not show up until I set default resource 4. The problem of KMail (or if this is a Kubuntu problem) not signalling a failed pop retrieval still exist. I have an old, no more used account, to test this and KMail still says nothing on trying to retrieve from this account All in all, after fixing the empty folders and the hundreds of tags (whereever they originated) it seems to do the job just as good or bad as KMail "old". Message-ID: Dear Everybody At present, I do not manage to smoothly and effectively sync the "Akonadi-Googledate-Resource" address book in Kontact (@ Kubuntu Natty & KDE 4.6.2) with that of GMAIL. My question is: what else can I do to ensure a smooth synchronisation beside from the measures summarised below? As far as I know, I have done everything needed to ensure a smooth sync between Kontact and GMAIL: - the package "Akonadi-KDE-Googledata" has been installed; - via System settings > personal data > KDE-resources I have added the address book "Akonadi Googledata Resource" and set that address book as default; - inside Kontact, I have added the same address book. However, when trying to sync the address book in Kontact with that of GMAIL, nothing happened at all. That's why I have taken recourse to some provisional measure which I also took at the previous Kubuntu configuration at my netbook: - exporting the address book from GMAIL to a vCard file; - importing that vCard file into Kontact while adding it to the "Akonadi-googledata-resource" address book indicated there. The contacts all have been imported as far I can see - however, without the photo's attached to several of them: inside the address books in GMAIL as well as at my Nokia N900. Also after syncing Kontact with GMAIL, the photo's do not show up in Kontact. This is weird - they still did so at the previous Kubuntu configuration after exactly the same procedure. For those who will reply: thx. for your feedback. Respectfully yours. Bas Roufs. -- ==================== *Bas G. Nice. IMAP is also noticably faster. I had a couple of crashes during the KMail migration and I also had the problem with messages not showing up in the list. Also a few freezes but they seem to have stopped now. The reproducable bugs are mainly cosmetic: - Global font changes isn't applied in KMail folder- and messagelist and in the calender month view. - KMail systray icon flickers on and off when syncronizing mail, if it is set to only show when there is unread mail. - Automatic spell checking doesn't seem to work in composer. - Kleopatra systray icon is missing. - Icons for ToDo list and Journal is missing. These are just very minor cosmetic bugs so I'll just collect them during the next days and then use an hour or so on reporting them. All in all I'm quite happy with this release and I'm glad that the team took the time to iron out serious bugs. > As for the buglets when I have time will try to verify them > > As for the "conflict hang" it seems like some mails (have not happened > today) carries 2 "times" in the header (guessing here) and then it hangs > unless I happen to see the error message immediately and manually > indicate the solution -- Best regards / med venlig hilsen Thomas Olsen From o.sinclair at gmail.com Sat Jun 25 06:24:42 2011 From: o.sinclair at gmail.com (O. Message-ID: <4E07818C.50005@mindspring.com> I have just configured a new installation of Kubuntu 10.04.2 and am using a Nvidia GeForce PhysX HTMI video card otherwise marked as a Asus 210 Silent 1 gb card with DDR3. The card came with a Windows only CD. Are the video drivers automatically installed when I do a clean install of the Kubuntu DVD? How to I install the nVidia control panel? Thanks for any help.
