I think you should run the program pavucontrol from the package with the
same name if you have problems with pulse audio.

Thanks for all your answers, but, as I said, perhaps not very clearly
1. Kmix>capture is blank, settings>configure channels>available channels is blank
2. Pavucontrol>input devices has the greyed out message 'no input devices available'
3. system settings>multimedia>phonon>audio capture>communication - 'internal audio
     analog stereo' is greyed out.

I think this must be because the system has failed to notice the microphone on
boot-up and so failed to install a driver for it, I might add that the whole thing
worked when I last used it less than a week ago.
I'm using an amd64 processor and Kubuntu 10.10 with an nVidia chipset and am using
the latest (recommended) driver for it from the repos.
