OK, so I fixed the issue, but it was pretty horrible.
1. For reasons I cannot even guess at, the upgrade removed the
plasma-desktop package.
2. When I installed that package manually, I could at least get the KDE
desktop again. BUT somehow all my settings (everything!) had disappeared
into vapour. Fortunately, all the important stuff (I hope) was backed up
separately, but I didn't have any record of the actual widgets, etc. and so
I'm trying to put all that stuff back manually. And there are doubtless
some programs I rarely use whose config has been lost; I just hope there
weren't any important data that I didn't include in my backup script.
I've now included my ~/.kde hierarchy in my hourly backup script, so next
time everything disappears I should have a current copy of it all readily
available.
