But what is now required - and which is always required when trying to solve a problem - is to eliminate the variables which, in this case, is trying out a (borrowed) network card. Once this has been tested then one can concentrate on other possible causes of the problem :-) . Until this is eliminated as a possible cause then your question comes to the forefront :-) . First, does it work at all? Assign it an IP address by hand and then try pinging around. Also you can do this: hakan at jupiter:17:26:30:~$ cat /etc/network/interfaces # This file describes the network interfaces available on your system # and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5). # The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback # The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp More than once, esp. on my cloned VMs, Ubuntu decides to add a 2nd card and then forgets all about it. Pinging localhost doesn't mean anything. He should be at least pinging the router or an other machine in the same network. In diagnosing a problem we start at the simplest point and work out from there. If pinging localhost works then there is a valid IP address and the TCP/IP stack is functioning properly. If pinging localhost doesn't return any answer then that is where the troubleshooting has to start. There is no use pinging anything else until this is working. After that has been established as working correctly we move on to the LAN and then the external sites. This checks on DNS etc. If one jumps ahead and does the last step first and if it fails then you have to go back to basics anyway. Successful troubleshooting requires a methodical and systematic method of approach. It took me years to learn this and discipline myself to follow it consistently but it always works. I usually start by pinging the default gateway. If it works, I'll ping my server by IP address. If not, I'll ping 127.0.0.1. In any case, this whole thing was a mess. It turns out that the -23 kernel on the Kubuntu CD and DVD won't support this NIC, but -26 does. So I downloaded and installed -26, and then had to configure the IP address manually. DHCP would not give me an IP address, but it did give me DNS after I configured the address manually. -- Dotan Cohen http://gibberish.co.il http://what-is-what.com From basroufs at gmail.com Wed Jul 4 23:24:59 2012 From: basroufs at gmail.com (Bas Roufs - En.) A few recent comments on WICD point in the same direction: see https://launchpad.net/wicd, under the heading "Recent posts". Those comments aim at similar password and connection problems when using WICD - a package with the same functionality as KNetworkmanager. Now, I am working with WIFI - with no interruptions so far. When I try to load Chrome, the mouse pointer turns into a bouncy Chrome icon, a Chrome bar appears in Task Manager, then the mouse pointer reverts, the bar disappears and no Chrome window ever opens. In Firefox, when for instance I try to watch a Youtube video, all I see is a black box which allows me the option to block that video and nothing else. I've tried playing other Flash apps, none of them work. I have Flash-Aid 2.2.3 installed in Ff. I tried using it to re-install Adobe Flash Player, both stable and beta versions; no joy. I tried using apt-get to un-install and re-install Google Chrome, (I accidentally installed Chromium instead and it won't play Flash apps either); no joy. I tried using apt-get to un-install and re-install the flash player, several times and in several ways; no joy. I tried using KPackageKit to install Gnash, (because it's easier and it was possible); no joy. I even tried installing KlamAV in case I took a virus that's affecting Flash; I'm having trouble with the installation writing to it's own directories, but that's a matter for another time and anyway I was just being thorough. I'm running an AMD XP-M 1900+ system with 768MB RAM and a Geforce 5500 card, driver version 173. I'm using Kubuntu V10.04, KDE V4.4.5, core version 2.6.32-41-generic. I'm pretty sure everything else works. Please, how can I get Flash apps to work again? (Please note that I'm not a very advanced user, I'll probably need some hand-holding through this.) -- Allan From bmarsh at bmarsh.com Sun Jul 8 02:11:39 2012 From: bmarsh at bmarsh.com (Bruce Marshall) Date: Sat, 07 Jul 2012 22:11:39 -0400 Subject: Chrome Updated, Now Flash Won't Work In Firefox In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <3102469.Ni4KJ6pWDl@linux1> On Saturday, July 07, 2012 08:38:44 PM A.D. I was pretty sure I'd tried that, (I made what I thought was a good faith effort with Google before asking here), but I tried it again anyway using the apt-get call you suggested; no joy. I performed apt-get update, (three times, the second time because apt-get suggested it and the third because the second time it didn't get all the packages expected), then apt-get upgrade, then tried a forced reinstall you gave me again; still no joy. BTW, when I did the forced reinstall, the package it installed was adobe-flashplugin_11.2.202.236.orig.tar.gz in case that matters. In the Add-ons Manager, under extensions, I see Flash-Aid 2.2.3 - "Remove conflicting Flash installations and install the appropriate version according ot Ubuntu system architecture." Under Plug-ins, I see Shockwave Flash 11.2 r202 and Shockwave Flash 10.1 r999 Gnash 0.8.7 ...should there be two? Gentlemen, one other thing occurs to me. IIRC, Adobe no longer supports Linux. Is it possible that they planted a non-functional player in the repositories? But if that were the case, I would have expected many more complaints like mine. But this does not mean that the last release (11.2) is not functional :) It's normal to see all installed plugins in Firefox addons menu. Unfortunately, a conflict seems to have occurred. I'd suggest the following: 1. Try disabling the flash players plugins apart from the Adobe one (Shockwave Flash 11.2 r202), either from Firefox addons menu or, if you are risk prone, editing ~/.mozilla/firefox/xxxx.default 2. If this does not work, try removing completely (purge) firefox, chrome and flash plugins, and perform a new installation of firefox and adobe flash plugin. Good luck! On 07/10/2012 05:27 PM, A.D. I don't use Kontact or KMail or anything like that. I use GMail, Google Calendar, etc., for all those tasks. I conclude that Akonadi isn't doing anything on my computer other than hogging up valuable CPU usage. > On Wed, Jul 11, 2012 at 2:15 PM, Richard S. The color for 'selected' text is set to 'white' and the 'background' for selected text is set to grey. Somehow GTK apps are not taking 'background' color. Also in Nautilus, when I select any item it is not highlighted, same problem there as well. I even tried enabling Gnash and diasbling Adobe; at least I got controls, but no joy on apps actually running. With a little extra help from you, I apt-get purged Firefox, Chrome and Chromium, Gnash and the Adobe flash player, deleted the .mozilla directory, then re-installed Firefox and Adobe. Just to be sure, I ran apt-get autoremove then restarted Lucid. I first realized something was wrong when I ran Firefox and saw the same theme as I'd been using before the purge. All my bookmarks were still there, too. Sure enough, no joy playing a Flash app, (and I tried three different ones.) I repeated the purging procedure and noticed this time that apt-get hadn't deleted two directories because they were not empty; /usr/lib/firefox/plugins and /usr/lib/firefox-addons/plugins. After purging everything, I went back and deleted them manually, (sudo rm -rf.) Again I did apt-get autoremove and tried Ff. Again the same theme and bookmarks were there and again, no joy on Flash apps. But I did find a single Flash movie I could play; a short advert running in a small window. So apparently Adobe Shockwave _does_ work, just not on very much! And I remembered something else; I _think_ I had Firefox using Chrome's Flash player before somehow, which would explain why the update killed Flash on Firefox. Dimitris, you've been a great help to me and I want to tell you again that I appreciate all your help. So what now? The Telepathy KDE team has a PPA, but its 11.10 bits are an even older version, 0.3.0. Thanks, Errol. this might be an approach worth pursuing. Can you tell me how to downgrade an application in Kubuntu? From what I've seen in this list, it's a notoriously difficult thing to do. But I'm willing to try if you can give me an idea how. BTW, Errol, aren't we supposed to send replies to this list as in-line text rather than as attachments? I had to call up your scrubbed attachment, wade through a mass of HTML code, then copy-and-paste your actual message and manually format it. Not that I mind a little extra work in exchange for the help you're trying to give. I mostly use it for Yahoo so have not yet tried out video calls. I am not sure if it does so when installed, but I recall having to add the Presence widget to the tray. The tray icons could be better somehow maybe. I know the history feature is new, so I assume this will see some improvements. Overall the IM client works very well. It has been relaible for me, does not have the random Yahoo disconnects I used to see in Kopete. KTP does lack some features as compared to Kopete, but I personally do not use many of them. There was only one entry for a flash player in Firefox's Addons menu. I tried deleting the second entry from the pluginreg.dat file; no joy. I'd saved the file as pluginreg.dat.old first; I retrieved it and deleted the first entry, then saved as pluginreg.dat and tried again; no joy on playing apps, but loading pages with Flash movies no longer causes Ff to crash. Incidentally, that one video I found, (the advert), still plays in a diminished, YT-like window, although actual YT videos still only show up as black boxes. Dimitris, your patience through this ordeal has been an inspiration. Is there anything else to try? (2) TRIM your replies so that you do NOT restate what the other person has already stated! [***] And a general plea to all who get themselves involved in a technically orientated mail list, if you must provide details of some output, like a log file or something such as what was provided by A.D. Burrows, then *PLEASE* upload your log file/whatever to a site specifically set up to accept and disseminate such files like- http://susepaste.org/ (you can find your own if you want to, I don't care) and then *ONLY* provide in your message the URL to your log file/whatever instead of the whole frigging text of the output! :-( I, personally, do not give a rat's about what you, A.D., had as the output before running Firefox, or after, or in-between. I suspect that nobody else did either - except Dimitris who "asked the question". But even if I, or anyone else, DID care then, instead of having the whole sheebang being downloaded to my system and to all the other scores of people who read this list, then all I would need to do is to go the URL where the information is sitting and look at it - and download it if I wanted to instead of having it foisted on me without my knowledge. Question: why have Chrome when you are using Firefox simply to "keep Chrome around in case Ff can't do something I need."? What is it that Firefox cannot do which Chrome can do? > When I try to load Chrome, the > mouse pointer turns into a bouncy Chrome icon, a Chrome bar appears in > Task Manager, then the mouse pointer reverts, the bar disappears and > no Chrome window ever opens. The "bouncy" icon shows up because you have the bouncy 'icon' set in your System Settings>Application and System Notifications" And the reason why the bouncy icon continues but nothing happens is because the application - in this case Chrome - cannot be started. To see what that reason may be, go into a terminal and run the command to start Chrome and you will see the reason why Chrome cannot be started. > In Firefox, when for instance I try to > watch a Youtube video, all I see is a black box which allows me the > option to block that video and nothing else. I hit the wrong button and sent the message when I really meant to edit it! :-( . Sorry about this :-( . The legacy nVidia driver 173 is the correct one for the Geforce FX 5500 card. I stopped writing in mid sentence because I have a 550Ti card for which the latest drive is 295.59 and I wanted to make sure that what I was saying was correct. I checked the nVidia website and realised that you were talking about the FX5500 card and not one of the latest in the 500 series. I went to edit the message but hit the "send" button instead :-( . Kubuntu 10.04 came, as far as I can remember, with Firefox v4. How have you managed to be now using FF v13? I have set up an encrypted LVM with a root, swap, and separate home partition + an unencrypted /boot, and I have manually formatted them. When I start the installer, I get to manual partitioning, where I want to set mount points etc. When I set the settings for a partition in the popup window and then click OK, the installer quits and I get back to the live dekstop, without an error message. (like described here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/base-installer/+bug/572622) This usually happens on the second partition I set up, the first works fine. It is not tied to a specific partition, because I have tried different orders. Workarounds described here did not work: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1870357 Now, is this a known problem, and are there any workarounds? I remember having the same problem when I installed 11.10 on my laptop, but I got it to work after a few attempts there. Using the alternate CD is not really an option at the moment, because I have wiped my PC, and I can't burn another CD (unless you can burn one from the live system with only one CD drive?). I installed a copy of 12.04 just two days ago and again, it bombed on the manual disk setup. I can usually get away with about 4 manual entries so my work around is to just limit my setup to /boot, /, /home, and one other.. then I go in after the install and use my old fstab to add in the ones I left out and put them into the new fstab. I got around the problem now by using the alternate image on a USB stick. (I had some trouble getting my PC to boot from USB drives, that's why I didn't do it earlier.) This thing with the swap that Sinclair suggested did not work. swap is usually detected automatically, so I didn't have to set it up. cheers, Lutz From o.sinclair at gmail.com Mon Jul 30 07:47:11 2012 From: o.sinclair at gmail.com (O. As I said I don't quite remember HOW I got around it, just that I eventually always do. I play around quite a lot with my setup so reinstallation happens (too) regularly and I normally use a USB created with Remastersys. And meet this problem you had... but somehow get around it. From mdhirsch at gmail.com Tue Jul 31 22:15:07 2012 From: mdhirsch at gmail.com (Michael Hirsch) Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2012 16:15:07 -0600 Subject: running a shell script from a launcher without opening a shell window Message-ID: I use squirrel to look at databases. It's a java app that provides a gui for examining many different DB flavors. It's pretty good. I created an icon for it in my KDE panel so that I can run it with one click. My problem is that is always opens a shell window which is useless to me. Squirrel usually launches from the shell script squirrel.sh. Squirrel.sh makes certain that the environment is sane, then runs java with appropriate args. When I create an icon to run squirrel.sh, it opens a konsole window running squirrel.sh. Is there a way to create an icon for a .sh file that doesn't open a konsole window? I'm running 12.04, though this happened with 11.04 and 11.10, as well.
