some file dialogs never display anything

I was just going to respond to the requests for more information and, of
course, discovered that even though I haven't rebooted -- but I have applied
two sets of Kubuntu updates -- the problem, which persisted for a week before
I asked here for help, has now gone away.

I hate it when that happens.
