Help file not being displayed

Thank you for reading this.
I have two Linux distributions installed and have been using one of them
for around 15 years so I've become comfortable with it. The second one,
Kubuntu 12.10, has been installed since the day that it became available.
I have Viking, a GPS application, installed (both the Ubuntu binary and
a self compiled version. Neither of these will display the help file yet
the help files for both are installed. The binarie's help file is
located at /usr/share/gnome/help/C/viking and the self compiled version
under /usr/local/.
The same Viking application is installed under my other distribution
(usr/local/) where the help file is correctly displayed by pressing
"help" or F1.
I've searched the package manager and Google for any Gnome files that I
might be missing but nothing obvious has showed up. What might I be
missing?
