Hybrid ati Intel laptop

Hello, my uncle got a hp laptop with a ati 7800 hybrid and Intel chipset.
If i want to install the Cathalyst software from Ati, what have i to do to let it work?
I tried this; https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI
But than the screen went black....
Why is it so difficult to install a videocard normaly?
In Windows you can click a few times and it's done.
