I forgot to mention that in case you wonder how I could issue the 
command when nothing works, just open a tty and log in:

<Ctrl><Alt><F1> and type username and password.

When done, and xubuntu finished installing:

'sudo shutdown -r now'

After the greeter comes up, log into Xubuntu.
