As a workaround:

1. <Ctrl><Alt><F1> and log in
2. 'sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop'
3. When finished: 'sudo shutdown -r now'
4. In the greeter: choose xubuntu-session and log in
5. Enjoy. All your applications are there - and then some.
