ok, here it is from inside /var/mail.

cre at xpresso:/var/spool/mail$ cat /var/mail/cre
cat: /var/mail/cre: Permission denied

It's the same from elsewhere.  While logged in as cre, and in /var/mail,
I then tried:

cat cre, and it printed the whole file to screen.  I then gave alpine another
try, and in it's message bar it said:

[Can't open folder /var/spool/mail/cre: no such folder]

and

[No folder opened}

Mutt comes up with:

/var/mail/cre: Permission denied (errno = 13)

Whatever error 13 means.
