hello,
I have just loaded kubuntu 14.10 on my hp 32bit c304-nr laptop, but I have
no clue as to using this OS.
When it is loaded I have a blue design screen with one small window,
saying, THIS WINDOW IS EMPTY. I can get on the web fine, using FIREFOX.
At first I thought that the program did not load properly, but it has come
back up the same.
I have searched the web looking for an easy to understand manual, with no
success.
I tried downloading FROSTWIRE, The file downloaded ok, but when I
double-click to open the file all I get is a window that asks me what do I
want to use to open it with.
Also it does not recognize my wireless.
help please.

Hi Clyde

I'm afraid I won't be of much help as I am not very proficient at using the
system myself. But once you get your desktop set up and I am assuming you
are using KDE for your desktop you have a very good start on things. Billy
is quite right about that big blue button down the left-hand corner.
Consider it your start button. When you click it, which later can be set
to one or two clicks, a box should pop up. On the bottom you will find
icons for favorites applications, computer recently used and leave. There
will be a few favorites which you will be able to add to later. At first,
most everything you want to use will be under applications and when you
highlight or click on that you find a list such as education games,
graphics, Internet, multimedia office science and math settings system
utilities and help. Clicking on each of these will bring up various
programs when I click on office I get calendar, contact manager, database
development, which is part of libre office base, dictionary, dictionary,
client document viewer drawing program Another part of libre office and so
forth. These programs will handle most of your day today tasks. Other
programs you might wish to have are available through various download
managers. Semantic which is not a default program is one of the best
though it's older and its interface shows it nor is it that intuitive. The
default program managers do really need some work. You will find them
under the system section of applications. The first thing I would go to is
software updates which will check and see if the install software including
patches and security updates is up-to-date and if you need to will update
your programs. Another thing you might look at is the software center
which is also under applications system. This will give you a simplified
GUI of various programs you may wish to download and they will install
automatically when you download them. Be aware that not all of these
programs are free and the explanations of what each program does our
brief. The subtitle of this particular software center is muon discover.
While this particular program manager may seem simple, it is pretty
limited. Just to test it out and if you want an excellent program to play
most any media though the program can do much more Click on and download
VLC media player. After it installs you will find it under applications,
multimedia.

I don't know enough at this time to address your problems with your
wireless. Others may be able to give you step-by-step directions. If you
will give them the brand and model number of your laptop. Also helpful
would be if you would look up what type of wireless, which you should be
able to discover in your laptops documentation or from the driver name used
when you had XP which you should be able to find on the laptops
manufactures website for downloads for that model Laptop. My newer laptop
is a Lenovo 580 which has become infamous Even in Windows for its defective
wireless and total lack of support. For it I had to resort to a USB
external unit.

Hopefully this will get you started a bit. There are various sites on the
Internet where you can obtain help. However, I have not found a dummies
for Lennix site. The best advice I can give is to do as you did when you
first started using a computer and try things, write it down and when you
mess up, try again. I am an old fart of 66 and am now stuck in extremely
rural South Georgia and so there is no one around to show me what to do. I
will be happy to try to help you in any way I can but you must realize it
will be a case of the blind leading the blind. In addition, I have various
illnesses which make me unavailable at times.

The time around holidays and in particular Christmas is a rough time to get
any assistance as many people who would normally be available are doing
other things.
