network manager says "wireless disabled"; how to re-enable?

Following an update today, my laptop (running 32-bit 14.04) no longer allows
me to connect to a wireless network.

The widget in the system tray has a red cross superimposed -- which can't be
good, but I can't find any indication of how to change it. When I open the
icon on the system tray, the leftmost (wireless) option is greyed out.

System settings doesn't provide any obvious place to configure anything
associated with wireless.

So can anyone give me a clue as to how to get wireless working again?
