KMAIL

To get back on topic, there are two points here that *need* stressed:

(1) The search in Kmail is being replaced going forward, so the whole
arguement is probably mute, unless someone is staying on the 12.04
LTS...Check this out from Aaron Seigo's blog:

" and if you haven't ever seriously tried using Kontact (perhaps because
versions in past year left you with a sour taste for one reason or
another), give it another try when 4.13 comes out. We migrated one person
in the house from Thunderbird to Kontact after they started using Kolab
(mostly for the shared calendaring; coordination ftw!) and despite having
tried and dropped Kontact twice in the past they are now a very happy user.
Old emails were imported accurately, new accounts set up smoothly, multiple
IMAP accounts (and a local maildir one for good measure) and integrated
calendaring, TODOs and contacts .. what more could one want? ;)" Link:

(2) If a lightweight, "just get my email and shut-up" email client is all
you need, and you want away from Thunderbird, perhaps
http://trojita.flaska.net/ is for you?

I have not looked at the source code, so I can't say for certain that the code either optimized or unoptimized. Perhaps the code is really bad, and abundant resources hide this. Or perhaps the code is already optimized, and 2 GB is simply not enough RAM.
