From petergoggin at bigpond.com Mon Sep 1 04:09:44 2014 From: petergoggin at bigpond.com (Peter Goggin) Date: Mon, 01 Sep 2014 14:09:44 +1000 Subject: printer Configuration Message-ID: <5403F188.7020408@bigpond.com> I have just loaded kubuntu 14.04. I have the following USB devices to configur: Brother Laser Printer HL-22 Samsung Laser printer CPL-320n Epson Multifunction XP100 When I try to install them I am presented with a large list of possible drivers. I configures the CPL-320 using the CPL-315 drivers since the 320N does not appeat on the selection list. The printer works. I was unable to get it to work using ubuntu 14.04. I cannot see any matching drivers for the XP100 or the Brother HL-22. Can anyone advise me which drivers I should use. I was able to get the Brother hl-22 to work on ubuntu 14.04, but could not get either of the3 others to work, the processes always failing while supposedly installing the drivers. The system guided me to an epson driver to be down loaded for the XP100. Thr system just stalled in the process. With the Samsung it selected glutenprint drivers but again stalled in the process. Thanks in advance for any advice. Regards Peter Goggin From o.sinclair at gmail.com Mon Sep 1 05:02:35 2014 From: o.sinclair at gmail.com (O. Message-ID: Hello, I am in desperate need of some help. My desktop system has been running well for a few weeks on 14.04 with kde 4.13.3. Today I ran the suggested software updates. I didn't pay much attention to what was being updated other that to see it wasn't a kernel update or anything. I like to keep up with updates as they come. Now I have this problem where I chant click on the activity bar or close windows. if I press ctrl+esc to view the activity window I can't click on anything in the window, but I can navigate with the keyboard. I can only close it by clicking ctrl+esc again. This behavior will suddenly change and I can click on the activity bar and close windows but I can't do anything in the applications. or sometimes it seems that most things will work, but then I click on the K menu and I can't select anything with the mouse, just the keyboard. This has effectively stopped me from working today. I need help as soon as possible. This behavior seems to be effecting any window that I have open. I don't believe that I have a mouse driver, and if I do it is pre-installed. I am using a logitec wireless mouse. I broke my only PS2 mouse right at the begining of this process so I don't currently have one to test with. I do have a ps2 adapter that I will try. I am making it limp along by doing what I said earlier, dragging a tab in a window and dropping it makes all the areas active. as soon as I click on something, change to a different open application for example, then only the application buttons are active and the tabs and buttons in the window are not active. I then grab one of those application buttons, like the Firefox or konqueror buttons and act like I am dragging them to the desktop, but then drop them back where they were and then all the buttons are active again. much have to shut down This mostly works until something happens where no buttons work and the only way to switch applications is to alt+tab. This sometimes gets it unstuck. This morning instead of having a click problem I was having a white flashing screen. I changed to the x.org x server video driver and that went away. I thought all of my problems were solved, but after half an hour of working the click problem came back. I have disabled all the desktop effects, but that didn't help. I will try the ps2 adapter now. The other buttons are for rotating, resizing, and settings. The bar is also used to move the widget around. The settings you can configure which folder is used and other things. You can lock widgets via the right-click menu on your desktop, which disables the side bar on them, but also disables being able to move or configure them. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Well, I finally got an install disk, that sort of installed. Sort of. Nice splash screen. Unfortunately, thats about all the good I can say for it. Let me briefly step back. Last week, my faithfull old Optiquest Q71 monitor died, and I replaced it with a 13"x22" LED monitor, that is just spiffy, not to mention humongous, compared to the old Optiquest. Back to the present. In many various installs from a number of different *nix's, including kubuntu, if there was ever a problem reading what was there, you simply did the Ctrl-Alt- + or - thing to adjust the resolution to something more visable/readable. Not so with 14.04. From square one you are locked into a resolution that requires an electron microscope to just to see that there are words there, let alone actually read them. This on a brand new humongous monitor. Yeah, that's right, I had to go get my magnifying glass. Once the system, "installed", the resolution _still_ couldn't be adjusted with the usual three keys. Thinking perhaps, that this might be solved with the usual updating of the software, I started that, and discovered a most annoying little window, which claimed that _I_ had interupted the session, and demanded my password to restart it. It did this every four or five minutes, or thereabouts, during a very long download session. Once all that was all over with, still no joy on the resolution changing front. Unlike previous incarnations of kubuntu, there is no way in System Settings to test various resolutions. There is a list of resolutions, but all you can do is click on one, and then on, "apply". Giving it a try, the screen then turned a light tan, with nothing on it, and quit responding to the keyboard and mouse. A soft reboot brought up a screen that was all a darkish blue, again with nothing on it, and again, no responce to the keyboard, or mouse. I had to re-install 12.04 to get back to something actually usable. All I can think of to say to Canonical at this point, is don't be in any rush to get rid of 12.04. From the looks of 14.04, it's got a _long_ way to go before it's, "ready for prime time." I solved a different problem by using different USB ports and abandoning the ps2 ports making me think that the ports were just bad. I know that my dvd drive is bad because it won't boot from a live disk. I decided to try one more test before dropping a grand on a new system. I got a different dvd drive and ran a live disk. With the live disk (14.04) running, the ps2 ports work again and the USB ports seem to be functioning without a hitch. I am going to leave it running all day to see if there is any crash, but if not I strongly suspect that it is software and not hardware. Here is my question, what is my next step if it is kubuntu? I could re-install from the disk, but the problems all arose after I did an update, so it seems that the issue isn't from the initial installation. It seems unwise to just not do updates. I guess there is one other possibility and that it that it could be an issue with the brand new Western Digital HDD, and running from the live disk bypasses that. Does anyone have any ideas? The problem is that, when the power supply goes, you never know what symptoms you're going to get, but you can pretty well count on head-scratchers, like things that don't seem to be related or things that don't happen consistently or things that make no logical sense. Power supplies are brutal when they end it all. (: -- Little Girl There is no spoon. No idea, but you could open up System Monitor and take a look around to see if anything looks like it's using up a lot of RAM. > I think that before I go spend the $ I am going to reinstall > Kubuntu and start fresh. It's worth a try. After all, something could have gone wrong during your installation, and maybe a clean start will solve it. (: -- Little Girl There is no spoon. You could either take it to a computer repair shop or have someone come to you (some of the bigger computer stores have techs they'll send out). They can use multi-meters to test the components in your computer and find out which ones are still healthy. Or you could just replace all the vitals. I wouldn't throw away the old parts, though. If you're not comfortable testing them, you could always donate them to a school or Boys and Girls Club or church so someone who's into that sort of thing can find out how much of it can be salvaged and put to good use. So in short it happens. Then again it could be software. The older laptop is on 12.04 and unless I am somehow forced to I am not going to upgrade. The newer one is now on 14.04 with latest KDE and though everything works "something" is heating it up more than what it used to. And the last time the frigging "hybrid" Intel/AMD graphics worked as it should was on 12.10 if I remember correctly, meaning when I could use the proprieat blob from AMD. Since then the best I can do is to kill off the AMD at boot with vgaswitcheroo. That was somehow killed off after kernel 3.12 so I run kernel 3.12 despite being 14.04 that use 3.13 There are times when Linux is almost as demanding from the user as Windows XP -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1 iEYEARECAAYFAlQgF/IACgkQdVb2AWQj/7aDVQCeJxsdmb/sX9/EMjlSEXW+KHIt Ks0An24WJfikDyBHRnwj45lyrmbolRY6 =xiDA -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- From sdubois at linux.com Wed Sep 24 18:06:40 2014 From: sdubois at linux.com (Scott DuBois) Date: Wed, 24 Sep 2014 11:06:40 -0700 Subject: Update In-Reply-To: <54131A88.2080503@barmannsbar.com> References: <54131A88.2080503@barmannsbar.com> Message-ID: <54230830.3020909@linux.com> On 09/12/2014 09:08 AM, Richard Barmann wrote: > I have the Update Icon showing in the Satus Bar. I normally don't pick up a beta this quickly but figured since it was a final, why not? I ALWAYS do a fresh install and then make appropriate changes where necessary. So I started the install and the whole install took about 2.5 hours including downloading all of the extra packages that I normally add on. (imagemagik, etc) And I haven't looked back.... that is, I haven't had to go back to 14.10 for any reason. Everything seems to be working as well or better than it was in 14.04. Even the install was trouble free which is usually NOT the case. I always set up my disks prior to starting the install and then do a manual specification of where everything should go. And I usually have a blow-up when trying to specify more than about 3 partitions. Not this time. The only problem I had was booting from a USB stick which I made from the ISO. (AMD64 desktiop) The boot came up with a COM32R error saying that the boot image was not in COM32R format. Whatever that is. Well, that was a showstopper until I googled it and someone said to reply either "live" or "install" to the boot: prompt. Sure enough, that solved the boot problem and everything went just fine from that point. Just letting folks know how well the 14.10 install went.... Might be the best install yet. Not exactly sure what you may mean by "public facing." The author of a script can specify whatever shell he/she wishes for executing any script. You'll see this in the first line. For instance, scripts that begin with #!/bin/bash Will use Bash to execute. Scripts that begin with #!/bin/sh Will use sh. On Debian/Ubuntu, /bin/sh is a symbolic link to /bin/dash. Unfortunately some other distros (at least Arch Linux) link sh -> bash, so it's possible that scripts could contain bashisms, http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/trusty/man1/checkbashisms.1.html , but sh shouldn't allow bashisms. A script containing bashisms always should use "#!/bin/bash" and never "#!/bin/sh", but some "sh" scripts come with bashisms. Fortunately those Linux based routers only have a low amount of memory and therefore they usually don't have bash installed. They use busybox as shell and according to what I have read, busybox isn't vulnerable (at least not for the shellshock bug). > Not that I see myself as a possible target but you get the point. I think you're wrong here. Every vulnerable machine is a target because it can be used for e.g. botnets. Good point, when I adjusted that in kuser->Groups, I got a whole new set of error messages in the shell. One thing that is as yet unidentified, is failing to create a file: libdvdnav: Unable to find map file '/home/kbun/.dvdnav/IRON_MAN_3.map' Apparently, thats supposed to be there before the libdvd suite starts up. I suspect thats in the media automounting stuff somewhere. Then we get a couple hundred of these: *** libdvdread: CHECK_VALUE failed in /build/buildd/libdvdread-4.2.0/src/ifo_read.c:1670 *** *** for c_adt->cell_adr_table[i].start_sector < c_adt->cell_adr_table[i].last_sector *** followed finally with: Segmentation fault (core dumped) This is beginning to look weird. To log on locally I created a new user and logged on to the new user's acct. When I then log out I see my normal acct. So in the end I do not believe this is a (K)Ubuntu issue, but rather a third party software problem. On Mon, Sep 29, 2014 at 1:12 PM, Homer wrote: > I figured out how to get into the grub menu.
