Kubuntu Vivid slow to shut down

Well, the problem seems to be plymouth. You could try to edit (as root):
/etc/default/grub
and remove "quiet splash" (not the "") from the linux line. Save the
file and run:
sudo update-grub
Now reboot. You will see the boot process in all its glory, without the
plymouth candy.
If your shutdown process still behaves badlu, I'm out of ideas...
