No sound in 14.04

Thank you David and WMID,

I've just completed a re-installation of Mint. I woke during the early 
hours with the thought that I'm almost certain that I had forgotten to 
format the / partition during prior to the installation.

Anyway, I now have sound and the only application that is not working is 
Gqrx.
