handbrake visual issues (missing icons)

Interestingly enough, I installed handbrake on my son's kubuntu pc and 
there it has all the icons, so the problem is not with handbrake.
The only difference between his and mine is that I have activated the 
Kubuntu Backports PPA (which, btw, has caused me a good deal of problems).
