It depends in part on which distro you're running, (which
you didn't mention). On 12.04, you can do it by right
clicking in the desktop directory window, (on your desktop),
and going through the menuing.
Or from the terminal, you can try:
cd ~/Desktop
ln -s /your/target/directory YourLinkName
The following works for me, but doesn't work on all
distros. My systems name is xpresso, so doing this:
cd ~/Desktop
ln -s / xpresso
Puts an icon named xpresso in the Desktop directory
window. Left clicking on it calls up Dolphin, with icons
showing for all the sub directories in the / directory.
Again, that doesn't work on all distros, but it's something
you might try.
