Can login, but no KDE panel of desktop

I just grabbed the latest updates to my 14.10 installation and
rebooted.  Now, when KDE starts I get no KDE panel and a black screen.
My startup is working because I see my usual thuunderbird and chrome,
but the panel with the K-menu is completely gone.  Also, my usual
desktop and background is missing--it is pure black with no icons on
it.

Any idea what is wrong or how to reset it?  This is my work machine
and I can't function like this.
