Message-ID: I decided to go ahead and give 15.10 a try to see if it solved the problems I've been having with 15.04 (multi-display), and I've run into a couple new issues. First, the ethernet port has changed from eth0 to enx00249b0e398f I think this is a systemd thing where they think they are better identifying the interface. Unfortunantly the ports are not labled like this on any system that I've ever used, so naming things this way just means I have no way of knowing (or remembering) the name of the interface. Second (compounding the first), network manager doesn't see anything to manage. I'm able to get the wired network working using dhclient (once I do ifconfig -a to find the interface name) Third, the login time is insanely long, 10+ minutes from providing my password until the panel finally shows up. For the first 5 or so minutes the network interface doesn't show up in an ifconfig -a either Given the insanely long login time, I haven't tried testing to see how it handles interfaces going away during a suspend (I just do without this powerful machine and use my old T60) David Lang From list at xenhideout.nl Thu Sep 10 22:54:33 2015 From: list at xenhideout.nl (Xen) Date: Fri, 11 Sep 2015 00:54:33 +0200 Subject: what's the best way to report problems with kubuntu 15.10? I seriously suggest you just fix it by doing this: # ln -s /dev/null /etc/udev/rules.d/80-net-setup-link.rules Thank you for pointing me to that. It annoyed the heck out of me as well. For some reason Debian 8 seems not to do that. I had a very seriously messed up kde config, so I had to completly remove any kde related config directories to get it to let me login at all. I just found another couple of nasties In today's update, the 'suspend' option was removed from the power/session menu, so I have no way of suspending my laptop :-( What's going on here? This isn't Gnome where they remove user options with each release! Since I have it configured to NOT suspend when the lid is closed and it's plugged in to power, I tried unplugging the power and closing the lid. This caused plasma shell to crash, and then when I opened the lid I eventually got a second crash popup, and finally it restarted and I got the panel back. I know this is on the early side, but given how some people dismissed 15.04 complaints because nobody had spoken up or tested this stuff before the release, I figured I'd try to avoid that problem this time. Right, I just thought it depended on systemd, which is version 215 or so there. And the thing was introduced in 197. I always knew systemd was bad and then they introduce stuff like this with a complete disregard for their users. It is only 2% of people who have more than one "eth" and more than one "wlan". The feature serves only those 2% (who probably use the udev renaming feature, if they are aware of it) and doesn't need to be activated by default for the other 98% at all. But I guess they see or use it as a form of advertising. "We created something cool and now we want everyone to see it". Same in KDE if you look at the plugin list of krunner. There are like 30 plugins and perhaps 20+ are enabled by default, slowing down the thing. I guess they realise no one reads documentation by default unless they have a problem, so pushing it in the face of people at least makes them know it exists.... ;-). And only because on some systems the kernel is not reliably assigning eth0 and eth1 to some cards/NICs. Never had that happen to me, in the past it was not a problem. They could use their new naming scheme to auto-sort the eths, but apparently that caused problems (while it is unclear why the udev rules couldn't do that without race conditions). All very weird and suspect. >> >> I know this is on the early side, but given how some people dismissed 15.04 >> complaints because nobody had spoken up or tested this stuff before the >> release, I figured I'd try to avoid that problem this time. Honestly? Wow... never heard that one before. The main problem existing today is that most people want to continue using KDE4 while some craze about KDE5 ensures that for the coming 2-3 years they are left dangling. In maybe 2 years time attention will shift back to KDE4 to achieve a kind of "forward path" from 4 to 5. Right now everyone seems to be in a rather unhealthy kind of fever ;-). Personally I will not use KDE5 before the 3 years are past. So I would say that they had better left this development as an in-lab thing while occassionally bringing out milestones (such as complete, feature-complete library components) that could exist on their own (perhaps) and that form complete "releases" as you build towards the greater future. Component releases. That model would have obviated the problems of premature complete desktop environments in which ALL subcomponents are feature-incomplete and not ready for release. But more to the point of this topic's title, perhaps I can ask here: I will do it in a new mail. >> >> David Lang >> From list at xenhideout.nl Fri Sep 11 10:14:40 2015 From: list at xenhideout.nl (Xen) Date: Fri, 11 Sep 2015 12:14:40 +0200 Subject: what's the best way to report problems with kubuntu 15.10? I think this is due to the rather rare LOCALE setup you use, because let's face the obvious, en_JP is not very common. There currently is an open bug you can subscribe to here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kde-runtime/+bug/1322968/comments/16 I presume the underlying system doesn't provide the combination. As for Cherrytree,l that would be in the other thread, not a good idea to mix answers :) Regards, Myriam -- Protect your freedom and join the Fellowship of FSFE: http://www.fsfe.org Please don't send me proprietary file formats, use ISO standard ODF instead (ISO/IEC 26300) From nyuwa at hb.tp1.jp Mon Sep 28 17:27:53 2015 From: nyuwa at hb.tp1.jp (Thomas Blasejewicz) Date: Tue, 29 Sep 2015 02:27:53 +0900 Subject: file names In-Reply-To: References: <55FE6F0C.9050206@hb.tp1.jp> <5604E3A9.5070506@hb.tp1.jp> <5608FF2F.7070703@hb.tp1.jp> Message-ID: <56097899.4030802@hb.tp1.jp> On 2015/09/28 20:18, Myriam Schweingruber wrote: > Hi Thomas, > > On Mon, Sep 28, 2015 at 10:49 AM, Thomas wrote: >>>> On 2015/09/20 19:48, Myriam Schweingruber wrote: >>>> >>>> >>>> sudo locale-gen "en_JP.UTF-8" >>>> >>>> I think this is due to the rather rare LOCALE setup you use, because >>>> let's face the obvious, en_JP is not very common. You mean the system will not allow me to set my locale to "Japan", but have English as an interface language? That sounds rather greedy to me. And it DID work before ... >>>> As for Cherrytree,l that would be in the other thread, not a good idea >>>> to mix answers :) You are right, of course. Sorry. I was/am under the impression, however, that because in BOTH cases the computer complains about the "locale", that this is maybe one and the same problem. There will be no direct upgrade path from 12.04 to 16.04. However I would wait until the release of 16.04 and do the upgrades 12.04 -> 14.04 and 14.04 -> 16.04 directly one after the other. I imagine there will be some during the UOS as that is when planning goes on for the next cycle ie. 16.04 this time around. I would also jump to 14.04 from 12.04 as the jump from 12.04 -> 16.04 will be very bumpy with the number of changes.
