URL: From list at xenhideout.nl Wed Aug 3 11:11:44 2016 From: list at xenhideout.nl (Xen) Date: Wed, 03 Aug 2016 13:11:44 +0200 Subject: encrypted system fails to boot when Sil3132 is present. Message-ID: How can I debug a failure in the initrd boot sequence if and when a root filesystem cannot be loaded? I have a Sil3132 SATA RAID controller card that when installed into the system (even with no harddisks on it) will cause my (encrypted) system to fail booting. The first thing that visibly happens is that the volume group on which the root partition is situated, cannot be found. "Volume group "linux" not found" But before that the crypt device opens *fine* -- this happens both on Kubuntu 16.04 and Mint 18, which ...kinda stem from the same roots. So: - crypt is getting unlocked and *should* be getting mapped to a /dev/mapper/xxx name. - this *should* automatically be followed by pvscan and activation of the volume groups - this is not happening Booting from an (older) Kubuntu Live DVD, the system boots just fine. I will conjecture that this is also going to be the case with a Kubuntu 16.04 DVD. When the device is installed it becomes normally scsi host0 and host1. However I can change the order in the bios, I supposed it is going to be host4 and host5. There is no issue whatsoever with using any attached device while booting from Live DVD: /dev/sde1: UUID="14DCC30ADCC2E558" TYPE="ntfs" PARTUUID="021460ee-01" /dev/sde2: UUID="5866C79466C770F4" TYPE="ntfs" PARTUUID="021460ee-02" sde 8:64 0 698.7G 0 disk ├─sde1 8:65 0 450M 0 part └─sde2 8:66 0 58.6G 0 part At the same time opening the crypt container on the (non-attached) (motherboard-attached) primary harddisk (that contains Mint in this case) (but the same thing happens with a Kubuntu 16.04 Live stick (installed system, not Live) works fine too. In this case that was: cryptsetup open /dev/sdf6 sdf6_c lvs (((I actually did not attempt to mount those volumes, those LVM volumes, but they were loaded fine and should not give any errors))). So basically: - the RAID controller functions normally (at least in non-raid mode) - booting from a Live DVD allows access to both the controller-attached drive as well as the motherboard-attached drive - there seems to be no reason why mounting any opened volumes from the main drive will fail, after manually opening the crypt. - while booting, the crypt device opens fine by way of the initrd password prompt (graphical). [[ In Linux Mint it uses the graphical UI in this case; which seems to work fine; in my Kubuntu stick the crypt device is opened with a key file embedded in the initrd that grub unlocks). That should have no bearing on the result though, it is clear there are no visible errors that I can see related to the opening of the crypt device ]]. - even though the thing has opened fine, it then cannot find the root device (that is situated on LVM). In order to test I can attach another disk that has a non-encrypted root filesystem (also on LVM) directly on a PV (no partitions) -- if the booting system will not find the PV in this case it means it will just not find any PVs (it is sitting directly on the device (/dev/sda). I will finish this email after testing this, so postponing. So back in Kubuntu now the system boots just fine. Apart from the encryption the amount of differences between the systems is minute: - both Mint 18 and the Kubuntu 16.04 stick are running relatively recent kernels with Mint somewhat more up to date; the current Kubuntu system is also up to date; but both Mint and the stick (both encrypted with LUKS) fail. - there are no adjustments to the initrd of the encrypted systems other than (naturally) the inclusion of the cryptsetup tools, hooks and scripts. And yet after opening the crypt device the root filesystem will not be found, whereas it will be found just fine if the controller is not there. How can this be? Grub makes this device map (which is as it should be:) (hd0) /dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST1000LM024_HN-M101MBB_S2ZWJ9DG703561 (hd1) /dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD7500BPKX-00HPJT0_WD-WX81AB574LVH (The current system is booted from ST1000. The WD7500 is on the extra controller (the Sil3132). Again: even if you remove that second drive, the system still fails to boot. The controller gets host2 (I was mistaken) and host4: [ 2.694148] scsi host2: sata_sil24 But ata5 and 6 I believe: [ 2.707848] scsi host4: sata_sil24 [ 2.707956] ata5: SATA max UDMA/100 host m128 at 0xfdcff000 port 0xfdcf8000 irq 16 [ 2.707960] ata6: SATA max UDMA/100 host m128 at 0xfdcff000 port 0xfdcfa000 irq 16 [ 4.928048] ata5: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 0) [ 4.932888] ata5.00: ATA-8: WDC WD7500BPKX-00HPJT0, 01.01A01, max UDMA/133 [ 4.932891] ata5.00: 1465149168 sectors, multi 16: LBA48 NCQ (depth 31/32) [ 4.936887] ata5.00: configured for UDMA/100 [ 4.937122] scsi 2:0:0:0: Direct-Access ATA WDC WD7500BPKX-0 1A01 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5 [ 4.937469] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdf] 1465149168 512-byte logical blocks: (750 GB/699 GiB) [ 4.937472] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdf] 4096-byte physical blocks [ 4.937525] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdf] Write Protect is off [ 4.937528] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdf] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00 [ 4.937552] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdf] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA [ 4.937812] sd 2:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg6 type 0 [ 4.942838] sdf: sdf1 sdf2 [ 4.943215] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdf] Attached SCSI disk [ 7.016034] ata6: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 0) There is no dmesg output from pvscan (on this working system). I think the command sudo apt-get install -f would fix the problem. Otherwise you should find out which packages are broken. Then reinstall these broken packages first. Afterwards it should be possible to install the new packages. I selected sddm as the display manager at the second prompt during install (if I remember correctly, kdm was available at the first prompt) because LightDM is too limited for me and finally got it to work by doing the following: Placing '/usr/bin/sddm &' in /etc/rc.local. My first attempt was to create /etc/sddm.conf by 'sddm --example-config > /etc/sddm.conf' - didn't work, got a black screen instead of a display manager on reboot. Second attempt was 'systemctl enable sddm.service' which reported success but, on reboot - black screen. Third attempt was placing '/usr/bin/sddm' in /etc/rc.local - that produced a display manager but Ctrl-Al-F1 produced the initial Kubuntu screen and Ctrl-D showed the progress but I couldn't get a prompt, Ctrl-Alt-F2 through F6 simply didn't work. Adding the & provided Ctrl-Alt-F[1..6] functionality. I had to set Folder view to restore my icons (I haven't arranged them back like they were yet) and re-pick a wallpaper. Although more icons worked than didn't I had to recreate the icon for the following to get it to work: Dolphin, kpat, kbounce, kmines, kshisen, Gwenview, kcalc, kwrite, okteta and Opera. Before I did I typically got "KDEInit could not launch " or the desktop file opened in Kate. I also got a couple of odd messages about not being able to find the app file (although they all launched successfully from a terminal prompt). Inkscape was somehow no longer installed, reinstalling and recreating the icon resolved the issue. Interestingly, Dolphin and Kcalc no longer have an icon available. Dolphinsu hangs on launch. As a personal preference, I wasn't satisfied with the new window decoration, it took a little looking to find that right-clicking on any window title, selecting More Actions then Window Manager Settings allowed me to install/select a theme I liked. Hopefully some of this helps someone else, I am wondering if kdm will be available in the future and if there is a better way to implement sddm than I found. The jump from 14.04 to 16.04 is rather a huge one, KDM has been replaced by SDDM, systemd replacing upstart with handling the login manager like SDDM. We had a similar issue on 15.04 or 10 that was fixed in the next version. KDM was replaced by lightdm during the upgrade 12.04 -> 14.04 IIRC, so your use of KDM was not a standard situation. OTOH KDM was still available for 14.04, so the upgrade script should have handled it gracefully IMHO. But to me it looks a bit strange that sddm isn't enabled automatically. You can install using APT-GET or it may be available in the Muon repository. Keep in mind that the f3write will erase anything and everything on the SD card. The other utility is f3read, use the man pages to work out how to use it effectively for your purposes. Good luck!s Tom -- "Labor is prior to, and independent of capital. I've tried f3write and f3read. Nothing was erased. Rather, the free space has been filled up with dummy files (random numbers). So, only the unused part of the SD-Card has been tested. Both commands have not revealed any defects. Then there is a /home in the / partition (which is needed anyway as a mount point). After the install is completed you could then write your own fstab entry for the separate /home partition. And should not be needed... I tried Manjaro just to see and there were no problems with seeing the /home as ext4. If Manjaro had not killed my wireless that might have meant a move... I decided to turn kwallet off, but I cannot do so. I can turn it off in kwalletmanager5, but then every single application that uses it, or wants to use it, will cause prompts for creating a new wallet (chrome, opera, etc.) so I cannot effectively turn the subsystem off even though kwalletmanager5 would have said that it is turned off. I also face the problem with "sddm". I was able to reach a CLI prompt and login. I just enter "dpkg-reconfigure sddm" to fix the problem. Next problem was with almost unresponsive computer. Reason was that "baloo" eat a lot of disk IO capabilities for almost a hour (close to 400GB on luks encrypted SHHD). You definitely should put some control on the first run. These two problems taken together leave the impression that you lost the computer - not a pleasure feeling in the process of the upgrade.  And lastly I still use skype. It look to work badly with plasma5. I will try to describe the problem and the solution. The visible part of the problem is that I suddenly lost all windows decorations. I mean: no border, no title, no buttons, no ctlr+tab ... In simple words window manager gone. Relogin fixes the situation and after some time it happens again. In the course of longer work I start to notice that it is reproducible in system settings -> startup shutdown -> login screen -> change background picture. At the moment when the file browser appears all windows decorations disappears. The other place is when I need to unlock kwallet (to connect to wifi). I start searching the net for some info. I am with lenovo x240 - Intel Graphics. There was reported problems last year that looks similar, but later I realize it was not the case. I have a virtual box machine on which I test the upgrade and there I do not hit the problem, just because I am "bad tester" - I was not logged to skype there. So finally I start to think that skype is the bad guy here. I list skype in "system settings -> startup and shutdown -> desktop session -> application to be excluded from sessions", so skype do not start at the begging of the session and I need to manually start it. Now when I am asked to enter kwallet password I have no problems, when I work in the control center I have no problems. For me the workaround is acceptable, but should be catch on test phase - skype is from official partners repository. The problem is easily reproducible on my virtual box, so it is not Intel related. (You cannot run GParted to modify a mounted partition, so even if you have it on your system, it won't help.) Then you can move partitions around, shrink one, expand another, etc. It works really well to modify actual system partitions without wrecking anything. If it were me, I wouldn't be using just one partition for everything, I'd have / and /home, but since you have everything on one partition, just delete the other partition and expand the one that has everything on it to fill the space where the empty partition was. --doug From user49b at gmail.com Tue Aug 30 06:41:02 2016 From: user49b at gmail.com (use r) Date: Tue, 30 Aug 2016 08:41:02 +0200 Subject: Screen flashes but not in Gnome or Cinnamon In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <9F9A81FA-714D-4839-8690-013339A48118@gmail.com> Hi What type of monitor is it?
