But in any case, Skype has been in the "partners" repo for ages and should install and pull in all necessary packages. The issue I used to have was with mic and speaker settings and I sorted that by installing a widget called Veromix - others have used Pavucontrol (that is gtk) MS "killed off" Messenger as a freestanding protocol quite a while ago. But you can use your messenger/live id to log in to Skype and see both your MSN contacts as well as any Skype contacts you may have all the best Sinclair On 29/01/2016 21:39, ray burke wrote: > > O. KMix shows only "Dummy Output". I have found a way to get it working after the system is up, doing the following: $ killall -9 pulseaudio $ rm -Rf ~/.config/pulse/ $ sudo alsamixer // Here I setup the sound card again and adjust volumes $ sudo alsa force-reload Sometimes this is all I need to do to bring the audio up, sometimes I have to repeat this process once or even twice before I can get the card to work. What can I do to provide enough information to debug this issue? Logging out and logging in again seemed to solve it and sound device was finally detected, however it was not a permanent solution. I've played with configuration a little bit and since couple of days this problem disappeared. I think that adding your user to audio group did the trick. Install kuser and check if that helps. cheers, Robert Kruszewski From rayburke30 at gmail.com Wed Feb 3 08:14:40 2016 From: rayburke30 at gmail.com (ray burke) Date: Wed, 3 Feb 2016 19:14:40 +1100 Subject: kmess 2.0 .6.1 in K12.04 In-Reply-To: <56B029E6.9020905@gmail.com> References: <2513084.SGQXWcUUUm@jake-latitude-e6420> <56AA91B5.4070404@free.fr> <56AADDF1.2030807@gmail.com> <56AF2513.3090700@gmail.com> <56B029E6.9020905@gmail.com> Message-ID: Clay, what is a simple messenger service then to use? ray On Tue, Feb 2, 2016 at 3:00 PM, O. I HAVE to be on Skype for business reasons and it is apparently the most used even on Linux despite not being very actively maintained or open source. And I use it mainly for chat, not calls or video. Then you have GTalk/Hangouts or Jabber, both supported via Kopete/KTelepathy/Pidgin and Jitsi. There is still Yahoo messenger and ICQ, both again supported by above mentioned clients. if you want to combine phone/computer then it is either Hangouts (Google), Skype or Viber. Or Whatsapp, but you then have to go via a browser on the computer which is, where I live, a bit "clumsy" and slow cheers, Sinclair On 03/02/2016 10:14, ray burke wrote: > Clay, > > what is a simple messenger service then to use? > > ray > > On Tue, Feb 2, 2016 at 3:00 PM, O. Yes, I see the same problem here, *however*, even though I'm not 100% aware of the current fad-du-jour (so what I'm saying could be wrong), I think that now permission to the sound (and other) devices is not granted by group membership but by consolekit (or policykit or whateverkit or maybe even systemd) when a user logged in locally. Maybe the whateverkit/systemd is too slow to grant permission to the sound device? Or kde doesn't communicate with it properly each and every time? Startx works, creating a session on :1 (on whichever vtty logged into), since the phantom DM is laying claim to :0 on vtty7. sddm.log shows sddm-helper exited and greeter stopped, which is a poor clue to where the problem lies. Message-ID: <201602281323.21067.gheskett@wdtv.com> Greetings; A thread on the debian list gave me a hint as to how to fix a 14 year old problem with my now elderly but still working, HP dv5120us lappy. But before I can apply it, I need to find the hotkeys editor in the ldxe menu's. Anybody know where that is? Thanks. But some additional searching led to a utility called keylaunch, which is user specific, and likely will be able to be configured to do that job. But life gets in the way, so probably not today.
