Furthermore, if you use kmail, your messages are also stored in one of those directories, so it may be better to not wipe them but move them to some backup location. Since the system itself doesn't lock up, last time it happened I just SSH'd into the box and checked the syslog. The only thing of note really, apart from USB errors, was an error message from Nouveau: jun 30 20:40:30 xenpc kernel: nouveau 0000:01:00.0: fifo: LB_ERROR After that I get a whole bunch of USB errors, but I believe they are more common: jun 30 20:41:06 xenpc kernel: usb 1-4-port2: cannot reset (err = -110) jun 30 20:41:06 xenpc kernel: usb 1-4-port2: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad? jun 30 20:41:07 xenpc upowerd[1442]: (upowerd:1442): UPower-Linux-WARNING **: failed to coldplug unifying device: Failed to write HID++ request: Connection timed out jun 30 20:41:07 xenpc kernel: usb 1-4-port2: cannot disable (err = -110) jun 30 20:41:08 xenpc kernel: usb 1-4-port2: cannot reset (err = -110) And it does this weirdness: jun 30 20:44:49 xenpc org.kde.KScreen[2710]: kscreen: Primary output changed from KScreen::Output(Id: 99 , Name: "DVI-I-1" ) ( "DVI-I-1" ) to KScreen::Output(Id: 99 , Name: "DVI-I-1" ) ( "DVI-I-1" ) But that's all that is in there. Nothing else that I can do works, except that when I issue "service sddm restart" I am instantly back at the login screen and can login just fine, I have just lost any data if it was not saved by the application or webservice. I can find no information on the Nouveau error (but Google is not very good nowadays) and this also happens with nVidia (latest, or almost-latest) and so I think it is more a KDE thing than anything else? If it is not you would expect the thing to keep happening with Cinnamon, but it won't take long to find out, I guess. Regards, and thanks. Message-ID: <16870349.FW2ffPno4T@viaconsensus-camino> System: Kubuntu 14.04 LTS together with Firefox 47 and KDE 4.13.3. Hello Everybody. Late May or early June, an update brought FF46 - with several glitches, amongst which the "tooltips" with nearly black fonts at a black background. I am sure, this problem is familiar to several amongst you. Recently, Firefox upgraded to version 47. No doubt, several problems have been solved. But the tooltips are still essentially unreadable. An internet research made clear to me that: = more people are wrestling with this issue; = a bug report already has been written; = the problem has been solved in the Firefox coming with *Ubuntu 16.06 LTS. However, my first opportunity to upgrade to Kubuntu 16.04 will be a few weeks or months later. For the time being, I need at least some temporary "workaround". When looking for this, I stumbled upon this blog from "AshOnIt": https://ashonit.blogspot.nl/2016/06/fix-kde-unreadable-tooltip.html "AshOnIt" proposes two seemingly good ways to solve the problem for the time being. However, for both methods, we need to use this dialogue: "Colors — KDE Control Module" I have been looking for this "KDE Control Menu" in SYSTEM SETTIINGS. However, I cannot find it there. Also another internet search does not bring the clarity I need. The "Color" button available in SYSTEM SETTINGS > hardware, points at something else. Is there any other place where I can find it? Or can I invoke it via some command line command? Thanks for considering this question. Yours. Bas G. Roufs. -- ======================================== Bas G. Roufs Utrecht, NL, EU. In the Kmenu, type in "color: in the search box. Or, go to System Settings >> Application Appearance (or type "color in the search box available there). The problem there, is changing the color changes it everywhere in KDE, so it may cause things to look different there. Another option is to switch to a different gtk3 theme, which can be done in a different section under Application Appearance. There are only a couple there, but you can easily browse and install different ones, Scratch that , as the kde-look website is doing massive upgrade and in the process breaking and/or mangling the Get New Stuff functionality in KDE right now The problem is the oxygen-gtk theme, which has not kept up with the move by Firefox to gtk3. Things work properly in KDE Plasma 5 in 16.04 basically because a completely different theme is used there. In 14.04, I switched to the 'default" gtk3 theme and I don't have the issue,or any others present in the oxygen-gtk theme At least there are different ways of addressing this to suit more people. -- Clay Weber From kassube at gmx.net Sat Jul 2 20:31:30 2016 From: kassube at gmx.net (Nils Kassube) Date: Sat, 02 Jul 2016 22:31:30 +0200 Subject: "Black" tooltip problem Firefox: 1. After some experiments I found the point where to change it to make the tooltips readable. Start systemsettings, go to "Application Appearence" -> "GTK". Change the selection for GTK3 Theme from oxygen-gtk to something else and click the "Apply" button. Nils From basroufs at gmail.com Sat Jul 2 20:41:51 2016 From: basroufs at gmail.com (Bas G. After this, close and restart Firefox. Now, the tooltips have a yellow background and black fonts - not the utmost beautiful solution, but it works for now. When I turn the PC on I get a black screen and after about 3-4 minutes I will get the Bios screen and then the grub menu. When I choose Kubuntu I get a blackscreen again and eventually I get the "Kubuntu 16.04 !!!" and then I will, after another minute or two It will boot up. Also do you dual boot with Windows10? Because that is also a cause for long waits during boot. (Windows 10 achieves it's fast boot times with a trick, it does not really shut down, but goes into sort of a hibernation state. So if you boot into another OS after running Win10 you first have to wait for it to wake up and then actually power down, before the boot process of the other OS can even start to commence.) From dpkg.log, this seems to be the culprit: 2016-07-25 11:26:49 upgrade thunderbird:amd64 1:38.8.0+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.1 1:45.2.0+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.3 It seems to be ignoring my system color scheme, and to be the only application doing so. Even Firefox 47.0 is still cooperating. In Thunderbird, there is no longer a color distinction between the selected message and unselected messages in the message list. If I select text, such as an email address or subject or something in the message body, both selected text and selected text background are black, so I cannot see the selected text. In the addressing area of a message, there is no distinction between one address line and the next, so it just looks like one big area. I've tried to downgrade to 38.8 via "apt-get install" but it seems 38.8 is no longer in the repository. "apt-cache show thunderbird" shows only versions 45.2 and 24.4. Any ideas how I can fix Thunderbird 45.2 or downgrade to Thunderbird 38.8? So far, Thunderbird 45 is not showing any anomalies with the (very) few I have tried on my end at the moment. -- Clay Weber From chris at bvhg.freeserve.co.uk Thu Jul 28 02:31:44 2016 From: chris at bvhg.freeserve.co.uk (Chris Luck) Date: Thu, 28 Jul 2016 03:31:44 +0100 Subject: Issues with Kubuntu 16.04.1 Message-ID: I have three particular remaining issues with Kubuntu 16.04.1, though it must be said that it is a improvement on the initial release. 1) The 'Bouncing Cursor' and related options remain totally non-functional. 2) My Taskbar is set to autohide - it doesn't. Let me elaborate: I use the traditional 'Application Menu' option and, when I open a prog from the menu, the menu and taskbar initially close but as the program opens on screen the taskbar pops-up unbidden. This can be negated by moving the mouse over, then away from, the Taskbar. Highly irritating. Toggling (Alt-Tab) between two full-screen programs gets to be tedious. With the 'Application Launcher' option the widget closes when opening an App. but the taskbar remains visible (collapsible with mouse in-out). 3) When installing Wine (either the ancient 1.6 version from the repo. or the 1.8 ppa) it does not create a 'Wine' entry in the Application Menu but dumps everything into 'Lost and Found'. Attempts to manually rectify the menu structure with the Menu Editor fail. I'm assuming this to be a (K)ubuntu issue as it affects the repo version. Question - Does anyone else experience any of these defects? Hardware: Dell E521 (8 years old), AMD Athlon64 X2 4200+, 2Gb Ram, nVidia GeForce 7300 LE, nvidia-304 driver using XRender (the best it can manage without an argument). -- Regards, Chris Luck
