It is certainly not the best solution, especially if we consider that 
the msql upgrade included security fixes. Unfortunately the Ubuntu 
Security Notice USN-3109-1 also included this paragraph:

| In addition to security fixes, the updated packages contain bug fixes,
| new features, and possibly incompatible changes.

I always thought that upgrades to LTS releases wouldn't break the 
installed system, but obviously that's not the case.

Thanks for the instructions to switch to mariadb. That saves me some 
time to search how to do it. :)
