Obviously testing on bare metal is best, but we can't always get all the tests done that way. Apologies for getting the word out about testing so late; 16.04.3 has been released today. Tests are still welcome of course! I have a high end HP/AMD multimedia laptop. I tried 16.04 on it and had to blow it. The graphics were HORRIBLE. It's now back to 14.04. The Catalyst drivers no longer work after 14.04. I have also installed higher end radeon video cards in all our desktops. If they haven't improved video support it looks like I'll use 14.04 till that proverbial hot place freezes over. The old system offered upgrade to 14.4.5 LTS (IIRC). Download went smooth, but after automatic reboot the installation hangs, screen stays black, load goes to 1.29, fan blows loudly. Changing to tty1 and login successful: top shows that NetworkManager consumes ~42% up to 97.8% of cpu. sometimes apport runs, sometimes plymouthd - no other active processes dmesg has hundreds of entries like this: network-manager main process killed b ABRT signal network-manager main process ended, respawning How to proceed? (I'm not skilled with kubuntu, but had been using openSUSE for several years, so at least have some basic linux knowledge) Thanks for any hints. Help us test a new bugfix release for KDE Plasma! Go here for more details: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed. Unfortunately that page illustrates Xenial and Ubuntu Unity rather than Zesty in Kubuntu. Using Discover or Muon, use Settings > More and enter your password, and ensure that Pre-release updates (zesty-proposed) is ticked in the Updates tab. Or from the commandline, you can modify the software sources manually by adding the following line to /etc/apt/sources.list: deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ zesty-proposed restricted main multiverse universe If you are going to be testing from proposed frequently, you might try the pinning process as described on the wiki page about how to enable proposed. Otherwise, you can just sudo apt update and then sudo apt install packagename/zesty-proposed for each of the packages listed in the bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/plasma-desktop/+bug/1687444. If you do not pin, remove the proposed repository immediately after you finish installing the test packages, or you risk wrecking your system in interesting ways. Please report your findings on the bug report. If you need some guidance on how to structure your report, please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification. Testing is very important to the quality of the software Ubuntu and Kubuntu developers package and release. We need your help to get this important bug-fix release out the door to all of our users. The Kubuntu team will be releasing 17.10 in October. The final Beta 1 milestone will be available on August 31st. This is the first spin in preparation for the Beta 1 pre-release. Kubuntu Beta pre-releases are NOT recommended for: Regular users who are not aware of pre-release issues Anyone who needs a stable system Anyone uncomfortable running a possibly frequently broken system Anyone in a production environment with data or workflows that need to be reliable Kubuntu Beta pre-releases are recommended for: Regular users who want to help us test by finding, reporting, and/or fixing bugs Kubuntu, KDE, and Qt developers Getting Kubuntu 17.10 Beta 1: To upgrade to Kubuntu 17.10 pre-releases from 17.04, run sudo do-release-upgrade -d from a command line. Download a Bootable image and put it onto a DVD or USB Drive via the download link at http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/381/builds. This is also the direct link to report your findings and any bug reports you file. If the report is that there is nothing more to download or fix, try: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade which might help as well. "Dist-upgrade" will both upgrade any packages needing upgrading, and also autoremove any no longer needed dependencies. One final command to try is sudo dpkg -reconfigure -a where -a means "all". sudo dpkg --configure -a will configure all unpacked but unconfigured packages if that is the problem. Finally, you can once more run sudo do-release-upgrade which will try one more time to do the upgrade. Please report your progress to us. Most of the cases are different methods to install, and then of course we want some brief tests of functionality. Those are listed in the qa test-cases. Of course testing on real machines is best, but coverage via VB or other virtual machines is fine. Thanks for writing back with your success story. Tell your daughter that she can access previously used commands in the konsole by just using the up-arrow until she gets to the one she needs, and then hit return. Biggest time-saver of all time! In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Thanks again to all of our testers who made this milestone release possible! -v ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Martin Wimpress Date: Thu, Aug 31, 2017 at 1:15 PM Subject: Artful Aardvark Beta 1 Released! To: ubuntu-devel-announce at lists.ubuntu.com Cc: ubuntu-release at lists.ubuntu.com The first beta of the Artful Aardvark (to become 17.10) has now been released! This milestone features images for Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Studio and Xubuntu. Pre-releases of the Artful Aardvark are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu flavor developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs as we work towards getting this release ready. Beta 1 includes a number of software updates that are ready for wider testing. This is still an early set of images, so you should expect some bugs. While these Beta 1 images have been tested and work, except as noted in the release notes, Ubuntu developers are continuing to improve the Artful Aardvark. In particular, once newer daily images are available, system installation bugs identified in the Beta 1 installer should be verified against the current daily image before being reported in Launchpad. Using an obsolete image to re-report bugs that have already been fixed wastes your time and the time of developers who are busy trying to make 17.10 the best Ubuntu release yet. Always ensure your system is up to date before reporting bugs. Kubuntu: Kubuntu is the KDE based flavor of Ubuntu. It uses the Plasma desktop and includes a wide selection of tools from the KDE project.
