suspend to ram for a long time

I just experienced a similar problem: did a suspend-to-ram and when
starting the laptop all I got was a black screen. But here's something
new: probably due to my laptop being a low-end one, it was possible to
see GNOME desktop, although it was very very dark (I imagine I get to
see it due to high constrast or something).
GNOME was frozen, but I was able to switch to a VT and terminate
xscreensaver (maybe this is what's causing the problems? I'm going to
switch to gnome-screensaver and see how it goes). After that, I
executed /etc/acpi/resume.sh to no success so I just restarted gdm and
everything is apparently working fine.
