Fatal (Clean) Installation Failure

Hi all, thought I'd report this quick, as it seems pretty serious:
Dapper 6.06 fails to install on my Acer Aspire 1410 because it is
missing an inittab.
The error comes during the reboot after installation is complete: the
system hangs during "Mounting root file system" on the splash screen,
and an error appears:
> *no inittab found
> Enter runlevel:
I'd be surprised if this were hardware specific. I suppose there is an
outside chance that it is caused by the way the partitioning is set up
during this particular installation (though that wouldn't be good
either): I tried separate partitions for /home /usr /var and /etc (all
were from a freshly formatted disk with no legacy data).
I downloaded the install iso this afternoon.
