HAL issues

I just updated my computer today (I was having some unrelated hard disk 
issues earlier, but they're resolved now), and I don't seem to have a 
working copy of HAL.  I'm currently recompiling it by hand from the 
official sources, but I don't hold out much hope.

Is there some way I can get around this problem?  Perhaps an old .deb 
that someone could post for me?  If so, I'd be very appreciative.
