I have no idea if it is related, but my Sony Vaio doesn't do power save
well with the generic kernel. I installed the -386 kernel, and the
on-demand power mode now sits at 1/2 speed most of the time, with
occasional spikes to full speed. With the generic kernel, it was almost
always at full speed, with very occasional dips to 1/2. The heat is
much less now, too.
I just realized, though. You two probably won't want to use the -386
kernel, as I don't think it does SMP. It might be a useful test anyway,
just to see if the power management works better.
