Inkscape V0.44

Hi, not being computer literate I hope I have the right area for support 
for Inkscape.  I am having problems using it, in fact it just seems not 
to let me.  I have the loading of the software come up on screen ok, but 
when I try to use my mouse to draw selections, shapes or any pen node 
work it just won't work.  I have loaded and reloaded.  I have made sure 
that the GTK is the up to date version and reloaded that.  The funny 
thing is that I cannot get the selection to work on Gimp either??  How 
can I get Inkscape to work.
