Launchpad developers are continuing to work on ways of making it 
faster. The beta site in particular is now quite a lot faster than it 
was a couple of weeks ago.

Sometimes Launchpad slows down for a few hours while maintenance 
scripts are being run on the server. That may have caused the problem 
you saw.
