Depends how you use gmail. Using gmail from Thunderbird, I can use this
excellent extension (found it through this list - thanks!):

FWIW, it works just fine with Portable Thunderbird too, which fits on a
USB key (works in Windows, I've used it in Wine/Crossover Office too):
