Just to answer my own questions with my experience.
The update to the template went without a problem as far as I can tell.
The typos that were corrected and the new entries created new msgids as
expected and the missing msgids were deleted. So the only caveat is
that if there is a typo or other correction to be made in a template
then that specific translation will be lost when a new template is
imported.
