apt-get upgrade doesn't upgrade the Kernel but dist-upgrade does

You forgot to reply to all, Lance :D

Update Manager, the GUI application/tool, will do these three functions:
1- sudo apt-get update
2- sudo apt-get upgrade
3- sudo apt-get dist-upgrade


I'm NOT talking here about the Update Manager, I'm talking about Terminal Commands that you run to do a specific task. Having that said, from experience, dist-upgrade is the only command that can upgrade my Kernel.


On my Test PC, I upgraded the Kernel form 3.2.0-21-generic >> 3.2.0-24-generic and that has been done via dist-upgrade because apt-get upgrade did NOT upgrade the Kernel :)

I did not say it will upgrade to the latest distro, I said it will upgrade the kernel.


By the way, NOT only Kernels, some packages can't be upgraded unless you run dist-upgrade :)

That said "dist-upgrade" is generally misunderstood, that is many still believe that it will upgrade to the latest distro but that's hardly true unless one has changed the software sources.

Yes indeed, I know it's not a bug but we had a discussion (myself and other members) on the Forum and Facebook Group of Lubuntu (https://www.facebook.com/groups/lubuntu.official/) about upgrading a Beta Version to a Stable Version but just doing:


sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

I was telling them you also need to do: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade 
in order to get the latest kernel in the repositories.

So, I'm correct about dist-upgrade :)

because of that. When doing a kernel-upgrade, the metapackge will pull

in a new package (the kernel). So another package will be changed and
