You've really got to understand that Lubuntu is designed to be a
spartan operating system for older/slower computers. It's goal, taken
from the launchpad description of the team is:
Welcome to the Lubuntu Page on Launchpad. Members of the Lubuntu team
take care of LXDE and other packages that are part of the planned
Lubuntu install. Please join us and contribute creating a lighter,
less resource hungry and more energy-efficient Linux Desktop. It is
our goal to make Linux run on more cost-effective machines and MIDs
besides Intel CPUs based on ARM and Mips. The website of the project
is at http://lubuntu.net.
If you're looking for a system with all the bells and whistles you
will be much happier with Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu. If you're looking
for a usable, really lightweight system that also has the benefit of
the full Ubuntu repositories then Lubuntu is for you.
My personal suggestion is be careful trying to add the whole box and
dice into the operating system. I like your enthusiasm and I would
therefore suggest you make sure you run definitive tests on all
proposals for inclusion. The first question that is always going to be
asked is "does it make the system heavier, and if so by how much". To
combat this each and every suggestion should have had testing to show
that it doesn't add any RAM usage, has very little hdd footprint and
requires little to no space on the install CD. I'm not a developer so
I'm not sure exactly how to go about this but is there someone able to
document the best, foolproof way to test any program?
That way we can all avoid the speculation and make informed decisions.
