No sound, no volume control in system tray ( Lubuntu 13.04 fresh install on a new hardware)

Hard to point out what is happening... But I think too pulseaudio will
help.
As Aere told you it's a good idea install pavucontrol and pulseaudio
packages. Just make sure to install both because as far as I remember the
packages are not connected on 13.04.

The missing volume control happen to me when I had compatibility issues
with the kernel and my Nvidia card.

For a complete analysis could you gently reply to some questions too?

Did you try to set audio with alsamixer via terminal to set if audio output
is muted?
Are you using Ati closed drives?
Are you trying to use HDMI audio?
