Finally, 'do-release-upgrade' went through fine.
I got 2 msgs during the installation process which i do not really
understand and i'm unsure whether or not to worry about:
1.
---
(gtk-update-icon-cache-3.0:4275): GdkPixbuf-WARNING **: Cannot open
pixbuf loader module file
'/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders.cache': Datei
oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden
This likely means that your installation is broken.
Try running the command
gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders >
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders.cache
to make things work again for the time being.
---
I remember (from some hassle with crunchbang and themes) that
GdkPixbuf-Warning is something gtk2/gtk3 related. In any case, i did as
the installer proposed and while working with lubuntu 14.04 up to now i
do not notice a problem ... (?)
2.

[New version of config file /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d/usb-autosuspend.conf
will be installed ...]
I do not know if i should worry, but in any case, *FINALLY* with lubuntu
14.04 suspend to ram and suspend to ram on closed_lid apparently work
fine (may be that's due to the slightly newer fglrx driver 13.35.1 over
13.35.0 i had with 13.10 and/or to the new kernel?). That's great!!! :D
And then, during the boot i get this msg i did not get before (on 13.10)
and i do not know what that means:
---
Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox
Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.sbin.rsyslogd
Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.sbin.squid3
---
TIA for your patience!
