Folks/PPC testing team:
Just staying in touch, making this "informal" report for now. The last
couple of months I've been reviving my wife's old PowerMac G4 "Sawtooth" .
. . new HD, new screen, and yesterday I replaced the old optical drive that
only booted CDs with one that will boot DVDs . . . added some RAM. Then
booted up a copy of U-MATE PPC, no boot params . . . and several minutes
later I was into a good res desktop and stuff worked.
I then tried a Feb 6??? iso of Vivid PPC that I believe booted with the
"agp" params OK in my iBook . . . and we slowly (450 MHz processor) got to
a desktop with the Lu background symbol . . . but kind of rough res images,
and just the trash can and "install" icons on the desktop . . . icon ID
words were not read-able and the "LXDE" launcher applet never appeared.
While I was trying to figure out how to set the system time it seemed like
the system and my screen "went to sleep" . . . screen went black and the
power button turned orange from its active blue. Could not revive the
situation . . . shut down with the power button.
Rebooted the MATE DVD to see if it would work, and once again after quite
some time on the splash window . . . back into a working liveDVD. So, this
is a "new" machine for me, haven't done a bunch of linux installs on it to
know whether or not what boot params would be needed; coincidentally or not
it happens to be the "AGP" Sawtooth model. A month or so back I had a CD
with Xu 12.04 that I was able to boot and install from the old optical
drive, no boot params needed for that, very simple install. I would stay
with 12 but, as we know it will soon be "unsupported" . . . will probably
just go to 14.04 for it anyway, but does seem like there might be something
else I need for 15 on this '00 model machine. 12 doesn't offer a working
"suspend" at this time, perhaps now that I have 2 GB RAM I might try to
expand the swap and see if that helps the ability to suspend without
shutting down to revive . . . .
That's the latest in my PPC testing efforts, pretty sure this unit will not
be on the qa list, but I do plan on running it for awhile so there may be
time to test stuff out "formally" on it.
