next level, after upgrade my system from
Linux tdndlx 4.13.0-16-generic #19-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 11 18:35:14 UTC 2017
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
to
Linux tdndlx 4.13.0-19-generic #22-Ubuntu SMP Mon Dec 4 11:58:07 UTC 2017
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I get the "Error modprobe: ERROR: could not insert '8814au': Exec format
error"

The solution:
rm /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/8814au.ko
make clean
make
sudo make install
sudo modprobe 8814au
