I guess I'm kind of strange, so I certainly don't expect to be catered for
here. Being an Australian in the UK, I'm used to the US keyboard layout
(even on a UK keyboard), but much prefer (UK) English for language.

Yes, sorry.
When I installed off the CD, I selected Medium for monitor settings. It
detected the monitor number (viz iiyama HM204DT) and then I think asked for
the highest resolution that it could display. The sticker on the top of the
monitor says 2048x1536 so that's what I put in. Easy.
After the update and a reboot X was now at 1024x768, so I ran the
dpkg-reconfigure again and it now only asks about hsync and vsync which I'm
sure are specified in the manual but I wouldn't know reasonable values to
put in myself. I ended up finding them at the end of the "Monitor1 EDID
data" section of the X log:
(II) RADEON(0): Monitor name: HM204D DT
(II) RADEON(0): Ranges: V min: 50 V max: 200 Hz, H min: 30 H max: 140 kHz, PixClock max 390 MHz
(II) RADEON(0): Supported additional Video Mode:
(II) RADEON(0): clock: 388.0 MHz Image Size: 395 x 295 mm
(II) RADEON(0): h_active: 2048 h_sync: 2216 h_sync_end 2440 h_blank_end 2832 h_border: 0
(II) RADEON(0): v_active: 1536 v_sync: 1537 v_sync_end 1540 v_blanking: 1612 v_border: 0
(II) RADEON(0): End of Monitor1 EDID data --------------------
(II) RADEON(0):
(II) RADEON(0): Primary Display == Type 1
(==) RADEON(0): Using gamma correction (1.0, 1.0, 1.0)
(II) RADEON(0): Validating modes on Primary head ---------
(WW) RADEON(0): config file hsync range 28-70kHz not within DDC hsync range 30-140kHz
(WW) RADEON(0): config file vrefresh range 43-75Hz not within DDC vrefresh range 50-200Hz
(II) RADEON(0): Generic Monitor: Using hsync range of 28.00-70.00 kHz
(II) RADEON(0): Generic Monitor: Using vrefresh range of 43.00-75.00 Hz
(II) RADEON(0): Clock range: 20.00 to 400.00 MHz
(II) RADEON(0): Not using default mode "640x350" (vrefresh out of range)
(II) RADEON(0): Not using default mode "320x175" (bad mode clock/interlace/doublescan)
(II) RADEON(0): Not using default mode "640x400" (vrefresh out of range)
...
So I put in those values. A bit more difficult this time, and a needless
hassle since it was already a good configuration *before* the update.

There certainly was for me a big difference.

This was when upgrading to version 4.3.0.dfsg.1-6ubuntu8.
