they were already installed and at latest version at this point

it removes also x-window-system-core

no XF86Config-4. Check passed

not set
if I issue "locale", everything is POSIX

here are the questions, with suggested answers in () and my answrer in
[] if different

screen blanked for a sec, like if it were doing -probeonly. Nothing is
logged in /var/log though

There are differences in the frequencies (28-51 instead of 28-50, and
43-60 instead of 43-75). Also, the Modes are all "1024x768" now,
instead of the 4-way choice. The lower resolution modes, albeit not
good looking, were working, with old config.
The new config works, I see no difference except that I can't
ctrl-alt-[+-] to change resolution. No big deal, I'll squint to watch
those pr0ns... ahem...

done. available on request

I'm just pressing enter here on each question...
at the "please select your monitor's best video mode" question, it's
somewhat strangely suggesting 1280x960 at 60Hz. My LCD is a 4:3, not a
16:9 though. I'm forcing 1024x768 at 75 here.
I see no XF86Config-4 saved at this time in the /etc/X11
directory. Wtf? again the MD5 problem? Fabbione let me know if you
want me to redo this step.

-select keyboard layout (us)
-select video mode you'd like to use (1024x768, 800x600, 640x480)

In the new config, comparing with the one in first step above, there's
no "Generic Mouse", no "Synaptics Touchpad". The video card has
"Generic Video Card" and "Vesa" instead of the full ATI string and the
ati driver. I have 3 choices in the modes lines now, as expected.
The only available mouse is "Configured Mouse"
X can't start with this config.

done. All logs and configs will be on
http://bassotto.noc.seabone.net/~pieffe/
in a few minutes.
