Ubuntu and Dell

I like the looks of Ubuntu but have read some problems Dell users are 
experiencing. I tried the LiveCD and the Integrated Intel Extreme 
Graphics 2 video in my Dell Dimension 3000 desktop was not recognized -- 
I got only a basic VGA display.

Can the Ubuntu installer automatically recognize my video or do I need 
to supply some data to get it (or the LiveCD) to work with Dell? Thanks.
