It's not just an icon though. Basically, the goal is to make these things
appear if you have the hardware they're useful for. But because of the way
the panel works, that also means they need to disappear when you don't have
the hardware they're useful for.

All we can do at the moment is choose an easy to implement (and support) bad
hack to achieve this, and the best one available right now is the big hammer
approach: Load the applets on machines that have a high probability of using
them (ie. laptops).

We can't solve it more beautifully in the current timeframe. :-)
