just to possibly confuse the issue a little more..
i DO tend to have lots of 1-2 layer folders (desktop or home
directory), but i DON'T tend to want the old window open when i open a
new folder.. (can't get used to using the middle button to open a
folder! though that may just me still getting used to not using
windows!)
hence i tend to use the 'browse file system'/file manager on the panel
not sure if that helps, or adds problems.. :-D
