The mode change goes away if we remove the splash image, at least on my
box.  However, it makes the nice menu splash go away as well.  Neither
windows nor mac have a splash screen if you interrupt their boot process
at the bootloader level (windows has a b/w menu, mac has a command
prompt).  Should we just disable splash?
