For what it's worth, I'm not a superdooper hacker, but If I want to install 
software from magazine 'cover disks', such as On Linux Format I need to build 
the stuff.

I think anyone who gets past running email and web browsers will want to 
install software that is not out in a .deb file sooner or later.
