Just do Ctrl-Alt-Fn-F1 (pressed in that order; or Ctrl-Alt-F1 perhaps)
and log in; no need to use a recovery mode.

If you do need something equivalent for some other reason, then typing
'Linux single' at the boot prompt is the same thing.
